Total Recall Let’s just say it hasn’t been a great couple of weeks from an IT point of view. The main bokeh photographic laptop died and although I managed to resuscitate it the downside is that it now needs a large external fan running on full blast to keep it alive. Before anyone proffers advice about replacing the internal fan, expert consensus is that doing so wouldn’t be sufficient to keep the laptop happy. It’s seems it’s a similar situation to replacing a boiler only for the rest of the central heating to then fail! In addition, the network storage devices are playing up and the cloud provider I use has changed its T&C’s despite promising when I signed up that it wouldn’t do so. The net result is lots of transferring of files, most of them rather large files, which as you can probably imagine is taking up a lot of time. However, there is an upside. Whilst ghosting the hard drive of the now terminal laptop I have come across lots of ‘forgotten’ images that were saved in the deepest recesses of the computer. I’m always amazed at how much I remember about the circumstances of when a picture was taken when viewing that image even when I only come across the image years later. You would think that the process of taking a picture (adjusting exposure parameters etc.) would distract from remembering other things about a shoot. You might also think that each shoot would blur into the next bearing in mind how many photo shoots I have completed over the years. Somehow I remember most of them. This image of the National Trust’s Souter Lighthouse on the North East coast is no exception. Although I didn’t remember the exact date it was taken (22nd December 2013 in case you are wondering) I clearly recall it was a sunny but cold mid-winter afternoon when the light was almost ethereal. I had enjoyed shooting the coastline in bright blue skies for most of the day. I then watched the weather front visible in the photograph slowly move in from the sea where it appeared to be raining so the expectation was that I was going to get wet. The purple-pink tinge of the cloud provided a great contrast to the blue sky as well as the red & white hoops of the lighthouse which were glowing in the 'golden hour' prior to sunset. The late afternoon winter sun also really set off the grasses in the foreground. Although chilly, as it often is on this stretch of coast, the net result is a pleasing warm-toned photograph. I have other reasons for remembering this shot. As well as being an iconic structure with great views of the coastline if you don’t mind the steep ladder up to the light housing, I grew up listening to the foghorn on misty nights as Souter is only a few miles away from where I was brought up. Although an eerie sound I always found the foghorn somewhat reassuring. It activated when visibility dropped below two miles or when the lights of the piers at Tynemouth and/or Wearmouth couldn’t be made out. Needless to say the foghorn probably wasn’t terribly comforting if you were standing beside it as it emits at 120 decibels. I always try and grab a picture of Souter Lighthouse when I return to the North East. A tip is that the café not only does great coffee but delicious panackelty with stottie (Google it!). Two final thoughts: it never did rain so I did't get wet and I can’t believe I’ve got to the end of the post without any ‘Fog on the Tyne’ jokes! |
