Not (Just) On The High Street As we approach the festive season it has been a somewhat abnormal product photography and packshot photography related run-in to Christmas. In fact, this year has felt almost like how the rest of the population experiences the run-in to the seasonal period. In other words from a retail perspective (although IMHO still way too early!), Christmas preparations start in earnest once Bonfire Night is out of the way. Normally, I am thinking about Christmas at least six months prior to this. This is because I generally start shooting festive commercial assignments in June and typically have completed the bulk of jobs before the schools break for summer with a handful of shoots running to early September at the very latest. This year most of my Christmas jobs were shot in late September. I thought the flurry of shoots in October were cutting it fine but as it turns out, not quite as fine as the final (I think!) seasonal shoot I completed last week. As you may already have guessed this wasn’t down to poor planning by clients but the perpetual issue of product labels not being ready, printing incorrectly in terms of colour reproduction or displaying incorrect information. If you have shopped for presents this Christmas on any ‘modern marketplace’ such as Not on The High Street, Etsy, PrezzyBox, I Want One of Those etc. you may have come across my product photography and packshot photography. Artwork I have shot for numerous clients ranging from various food & drink products through jewellery to contemporary ornaments feature in these marketplace’s websites and in their traditional print catalogues NB: I should point out that I don’t just shoot Christmas product photography and packshot photography; my commercial images appear all year round. Whether you are a shopper or a seller you will be aware that such operations have a distinctive style when it comes to imagery i.e. light and airy with slightly muted colours and a matt-style finish. Although I sometimes advise clients to develop a photography brief that will ensure they stand out from the crowd this is one instance where it is definitely not advisable to challenge the norm. Conformity is essential and house style should not be deviated from. An interesting side point here is not necessarily that editorial practice is strict but that the gift buying public seem to have become ‘conditioned’ to the type of image they expect (and subsequently translate this into purchasing behaviour). Shooting light, airy images with slightly muted colours and a matt-style finish is not exceptionally hard although can be tricky to reproduce for those unfamiliar with Commercial & Product Photography. An advisory for any seller intending a spot of ‘DIY’ photography is to remember that NOTHS etc. are a shop window for your product and that your product (or more specifically the image of your product) will be compared - at a glance - to all other products appearing on that marketplace. This is not the time or the place to skimp on photography! As a Freelance Photographer I can obviously showcase your products via professional photography in addition to helping, if required, with styling and sourcing props as well as shooting ‘lifestyle’ images. Finally, if you are a marketplace seller requiring product and packshot images please don’t leave things too late for Christmas 2018. As much as I would prefer to avoid mince pies in July you really can’t beat advance preparation! |
