Cambs Photography Event If you are a regular reader of the Blog, follow the bokeh photographic social media channels or if you have attended one of my Photography Training Courses you will be aware that I appreciate the aesthetic of analogue (i.e. film) photography. I really miss having to make important decisions about what film to load for any given condition. I’m not just referring to choice of ISO speed but things like choosing Kodak Portra 160NC for great skin tones when shooting portrait photography in good light or opting for say Portra 400VC or even 800VC in dull, overcast conditions. Whilst I rarely (professionally) shoot film these days I try and hold true to the principles of analogue photography whenever possible. This was certainly the case when photographing promotional shots for the upcoming Cambs Photo Event. From the outset I had the idea of shooting cinematic-style images with one important caveat: using only basic kit the reason for which is explained below. Firstly a bit about the Cambs Photo Event which will be held on Friday 29th September at Hinchingbrooke Park, Huntingdon. The photographer behind the day is Jessica Coe and the basic idea is that photographers will be able to book timetabled sessions with different models, in various attire and makeup, around the park including water, woodland and meadow settings. There are also trade stalls (equipment retailers, make-up artists, props etc.), a photography competition and a networking session. In addition, I have been asked to run a number of ‘taster’ training sessions for those photographers wishing to develop their location photography skills. Although the exact format is still to be confirmed I will be incorporating elements of the bokeh photographic Introduction to Photography course alongside my practical experience of shooting portrait (including Active Portraiture), wedding, event and of course modelling & fashion photography. Sessions will be allocated on a first come, first served basis so don’t delay booking if you wish to attend one of these free sessions. Even if you aren’t interested in the training the event offers a great opportunity to practice your location photography whilst adding to your image portfolio and hopefully in the spirit of things sharing a couple of pictures with the models you have been photographing! Returning to the promotional images for obvious reasons I was conscious to avoid using expensive kit. The purpose of the shoot was to give photographers considering booking on the Cambs Photo Event an idea of what they might achieve with the resources available to them and most amateur photographers simply don’t have battery-powered 400W portable strobes for location work! Therefore, when working with the two fabulous models Lizzie Bailey and Andrea Drew (above) I used only a 60cm silver reflector (alternative suggestion kitchen foil if you don’t have one), an umbrella and a Lastolite 2-Stop diffusion panel (alternative suggestions – horticultural fleece) and a single off-camera Canon 550EX Speedlite.
