Where's Wally? I turned up at a house recently to deliver a home-based one-to-one Photography Training session. As I stepped into the hallway a large piece of photographic art that figured prominently on the wall immediately caught my attention. It looked absolutely superb. The rather pleasing fact was that it was one of my photographs namely ‘Whooper Sunset’: a slightly rippled line of 12 Whooper Swans in silhouette flying back to the safety of the Ouse Washes after a day feeding on the Fenland beet fields against one of the best sunsets I have even seen let alone photographed. For many years I offered limited edition prints, canvases and other photographic wall art; all large scale and most presented in a panoramic aspect ratio for maximum effect. As well as Whooper Sunset the range included: St Ives from a completely flooded Hemingford Meadow (‘stitched’ from 10 separate images); a tree spectacularly reflected in the River Great Ouse at sunset; the famous Anglesey Abbey silver birches lit up in technicolour from when I was the Winter Lights Festival Event Photographer; a solitary (Mute) swan on a wonderfully atmospheric misty lake; and the medieval bridge at St Ives one very misty and very early morning NB: although from a different perspective and on a different misty occasion to the scene featured in Blog 53. Unfortunately, if you are into misty/sunset photographic wall art (as I obviously seem to be!) you won’t find any on my website. Being a bit of a wally I retired the wall art page when the limited editions sold out. Seeing Whooper Sunset in pride of place in that hallway has made me realise that this was the wrong decision. Don’t get me wrong; I regularly supply, via the four professional photographic laboratories I partner with, large-scale canvases etc. when clients request this after a family Portrait Photography shoot or an Active Portraiture session. It’s also a popular option for Engagement and Wedding Photography. My current bestselling wall art are premium aluminium mounted prints although there’s a product to suit every budget. In fact, as much as digital predominates (the rise of the internet has changed the marketing of professional photography beyond recognition) I wish I could show every prospective client an actual photographic print. Compared to viewing images on a computer or mobile phone screen there is something special about even a basic 7”x5” print that goes beyond tangible physical contact although note the caveat below. Although the vast majority of photographs taken these days aren’t printed the print is far from dead and this goes beyond the revival of instant-print cameras. I never fail to be amazed at how good images look when printed. In my opinion depth of tone and colour reproduction is far better than for a digital image although ironically it is digital technology that enables enhanced capture in the first place. The important caveat is how prints are produced. Mass mail-order print services are not much better than high-street kiosks and both are poor in comparison to professional photographic prints. Although there’s never any pressure I gently remind clients purchasing a digital-only package that to get the most out of contracting a professional photographer images should be printed professionally even if not through me. Finally, watch this space as I intend to reinstate my limited edition photographic wall art range. I’m yet to decide what will feature but expect at least one Puffin for those who got in contact following my recent social media posts. |
