A Higher Exposure When it comes to limited edition landscape prints I mostly draw inspiration from the coast and the hills: not the most convenient subjects for a photographer based in land-locked, low-lying Cambridgeshire! However, whenever I do head for the coast or the hills I make all opportunities count. Unlike many colleagues I don’t wait for optimum weather (incidentally no one seems to know exactly what optimum weather means) before taking the camera out the kit bag. Neither do I keep the camera in the kit bag until I arrive at a pre-selected viewpoint. Instead I always keep the camera handy throughout the entire time spent at a coastal or mountain location to capture as much as possible whatever the weather conditions. This often means having several plastic bags ready to keep kit dry from driving rain in-between taking shots. However, sometimes conditions are near perfect as was the case for this series of Lake District prints currently in preparation. I say near perfect as although the wintry conditions on the Old Man of Coniston – Brim Fell – Swirl How – Wetherlam on the day I took these images was hugely atmospheric, the ascent and decent was extra tricky given sheet ice, a howling wind and a blizzard caused by the wind blowing snowdrifts off the tops straight into your face. Just as well my default instruction to whoever I happen to be with is always if I trip or fall make sure you catch the camera! The aim is to release some of these as limited edition mounted and framed panoramic prints sometime in 2021. I'm currently choosing which ones to take forward but in the meantime you can click on any image to view in Lightbox mode. A quick note on post-production: whilst I favour analogue (i.e. film) exposures for prints these were shot digitally. However, post-capture workflow is geared towards film emulation, in particular, achieving high - although still natural-looking - colour saturation with moderate contrast to enhance texture and dimension. Additionally, I look to include subtle split-toning of cool shadows and warm highlights and slightly less grain than professional film. It's all still a work in progress so watch this space!
