One of the great virtues of photography is that it is a broad church: there are an infinite number of subjects to photograph and almost as many techniques & styles that can be employed when taking a photograph. Unfortunately, most people’s experience is only of mainstream (commercial) photography which by definition is limited in conceptual scope & technical execution. It’s also somewhat of a paradox that despite shooting a broad range of exciting approaches to photography whilst students - typically using cheap lo-fi and/or old kit including film - after graduating photographers then abandon all alternatives in favour of middle-of-the-road photography using the latest, expensive feature-loaded kit. Regrettably it seems to survive as a profit-making photographer these days you invariably have to shoot orthodox photography as that’s what the market demands. Thankfully, I occasionally still manage to photograph outside the mainstream. Here's a small selection of my 'alt' digital and film (negative & transparency) images. Although some are more experimental than others none are extremely radical which reveals just how narrow the middle-of-the-road has become!
